  • How it works: This is a sophisticated attack where adversaries manipulate the normal flow of your application by exploiting flaws in your business logic. Think about a shopping cart bot where an attacker can apply multiple discounts by repeatedly calling an API endpoint, or a booking bot where they can reserve all available slots without confirming payment.

Practical Steps to Fortify Your Bot Backend

Alright, enough doom and gloom. Let’s talk about what we can actually do. This isn’t about adding a single silver bullet; it’s about building layers of defense.

1. API Gateway & WAF are Your First Line

Don’t roll your own. Seriously. Services like AWS API Gateway, Google Cloud Endpoints, or Azure API Management are designed for this. They offer built-in rate limiting, authentication, and often integrate with Web Application Firewalls (WAFs).

Your bot backend will likely interact with numerous external APIs – LLMs, payment gateways, CRM systems, etc. Each of these integrations requires API keys or tokens. Ensure that these keys have the absolute minimum permissions required to do their job. If your bot only needs to read data from a CRM, don’t give it write access.

Rotate these keys regularly, and never hardcode them directly into your application. Use environment variables, a secrets manager (like AWS Secrets Manager or HashiCorp Vault), or a secure configuration service.

5. API Monitoring & Anomaly Detection
