It got me thinking, and frankly, a little worried.

Even with authentication, if the data being exchanged between bots isn’t protected, it can be intercepted and modified. While HTTPS protects against basic eavesdropping, a sophisticated attacker on the internal network might try to modify request payloads before they reach the destination bot.
The Fix: End-to-End Integrity Checks.
- Message Signatures: For critical data, consider signing the entire message payload with a private key, and having the receiving bot verify the signature with the corresponding public key. This proves the message hasn’t been tampered with and originated from a trusted source.
- Content Hashing: Include a hash of the message content as part of the request metadata, and have the receiving bot re-calculate and compare the hash. This is simpler than full cryptographic signing but still offers integrity.
- Strict Schema Validation: Always validate incoming data against a predefined schema. This won’t prevent tampering, but it can catch malformed or unexpected data that might indicate an attack or attempt to exploit business logic.

- Monitor Internal Network Traffic: Set up logging and alerting for unusual traffic patterns between your bots. High volumes, unexpected endpoints being hit, or requests from unfamiliar IPs should raise red flags. Your SIEM should be looking at internal traffic too.
- Regular Security Scans and Penetration Testing: Don’t just scan your external perimeter. Include your internal network and bot-to-bot communication channels in your regular security assessments. Hire ethical hackers to try and break into your internal bot ecosystem.
